Amar

Feminism

The main focus of feminism is gender inequality from which many fields are covered such as economical, political and social. Gender inequality started in the beginning of civilization, but was in the 60’s when the feminist movement rose with impetus. From a historical point of view, feminism had three upheavals; first wave, second wave and third wave that show the constant advocacy for women to pursue a path in our society. Feminism proclaims equality between genders among institution such as religion, family and economy.

From the early days, women did not have more options but kept up their routines as reproducer gender. “Before the Industrial Age, life had remained unchanged for centuries. Most families lived by cultivating the land or by making goods in small-scale cottage industries. A women’s work was essential to the family economy…” (Hyndley, women and the family, p.8).Their role was consistently to be part of their husband’s property because there was no law that protected their rights. So their duties were under their husband’s desires. Since our society has different social organization, every class had different accommodations. Yet women from the high, middle and low class shared one thing in common, reproduction. Existing jobs such as peasants helped the family achieve a status. Farmers became richer to the point that women remained at home (Hyndley). Further more, “…pressure to change women’s inferior social, legal and political position began to increase. The demand for women to be given the vote was well under way…achieved until after the First World War (1914-1918).” (Hyndley, women and the family, p.17).
Guardianship of Infants Act looked after children by allowing women to keep them after their husband’s death (Kallen). They were no longer ‘the angel at home’ (Hyndley) as the Victorian ages called them. Since remotes times they have been put apart of the household, women were well seen as an object of it, but through herstory (Kallen) they achieved reliable rights. ‘Angel at home’ (Hyndley) became working mothers by the First World War, since husbands were fighting in the war. They became the head of the household, yet it was not just for emotional support but for economical support too. After the war, husbands returned to their duties and women went back to their initial job, being at home (Kallen). By the 60’s some societies permitted women to get back to work and to have better education. The invention of new charity and advocacy groups such as ‘Gingerbread’ which were supporting lone-parenting mothers, made society open a new vision for them, from birth control to law against husband’s violence (Kallen).

The 60’s defined new terms, rules and norms for our ‘angels’. The feminist movement developed three upheavals. The first wave; “period of feminist activity during the nineteenth century and early twentieth century in the United Kingdom and the United States. It focused primarily on gaining the right of women's suffrage.”
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_feminism#First-wave_feminism). So this created an innovative path, a first step in new changes. Women had been struggling for rights and finally were being heard by the government. By that time extraordinary leaders were such as John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. that helped to speak out and to elect representatives for the government as an expression for women’s right. It was not easy for women to sign up and to get a voting card, especially for black women. The second wave; “… refers to a period of feminist activity beginning in the early 1960s and lasting through the late 1980s. Largely concerned with other issues of equality, such as the end to discrimination. The movement encouraged women to understand aspects of their own personal lives as deeply politicized and reflective of a sexist structure of power.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_feminism#First-wave_feminism). Discrimination at work, community, colleges and universities made women realize they were facing a rampage of sexist ideas. Sexist ideas at work, when they were applying for a job, male jobs on one side and the pink collar on the other are just few examples (Kallen). EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) established guidelines that said an employer could not prefer a man over a woman, but few employers felt obligated to follow these new laws. This demonstrated that EEOC fielded over fifty thousands complaints of gender discrimination before 1970. (Kallen p.33). The third wave; “…began in the early 1990s. The movement arose as responses to perceive failures of the second-wave. It was also a response to the backlash against initiatives and movements created by the second-wave. Third-wave feminism seeks to challenge or avoid what it deems the second wave's "essentialist" definitions of femininity, which (according to them) over-emphasized the experiences of upper middle class white women. A post-structuralist interpretation of gender and sexuality is central too much of the third wave's ideology. Third wave feminists often focus on ‘micro politics,’ and challenged the second wave's paradigm as to what is, or is not, good for females.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_feminism#First-wave_feminism).

“Feminist main focus is directly on gender, because gender crosscuts all aspects of social life”. (Introduction to Sociology, Hewitt, white and teevan, p. 11) basically the movement points out inequality with a validity support from laws, groups and advocates.
Many women around the world have not heard about these new changes still or do not believe in them. This could be astounded for many of us whose perspective agrees with the movement. Still there is a lot of ignorance about women’s rights but also there are a lot of pioneers that will educate our future citizens. Different continents are rigid by different laws, culture and vision. America has covered substantially its branches but it has not always been good at it. Many citizens especially in South America still violate women’s rights. ‘Angels’ have been raped, abused and murdered with no other reason than being a woman. The percentage of domestic violence increases every year and the most common violence is related to women. The government increased their strategies to improve equality, harmony and stability but not too many citizens believe these strategies would bring a solution. So future generations would achieve a good understanding of the theme and these generations will be responsible for advocacy for those less protected.
Our generations would become like the members of the PCSW (President’s Commission on the Statues of Women) that included educators, writers, leaders of women’s organizations, union leaders, five Kennedy cabinet members, and members of both houses of Congress; which was divided into seven subcommittees that studied issues such as maternity leave, employment, images of women in the mass media, and special problems faced by black women. (Women of the 1960s, Stuart A. Kallen, p.30)

In conclusion, women have faced many injustices through the years as a result of the feminist movement. Feminists look for equal opportunities between genders in institutions such as family, work and education. The movement would be on those educated generations that keep alive its spirit and that persistently want to improve women’s rights. The following lines, as Kallen described, are about those rights emerged on the 60’s that were a relief on women’s shoulders;
The Women’s Bill of Right

In November 1967 the National Organization for Women (NOW) ratified its Women’s Bill of Rights, a document that addressed many problems facing average American women.

WE DEMAND:
I. That the U.S Congress immediately pass the Equal rights Amendment to the constitution to provide that “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”….
II. That equal employment opportunity be guaranteed to al women…
III. That women be protected by law to ensure their rights to return to their jobs within a reasonable time after childbirth without loss of seniority…and be paid maternity leave…
IV. Immediate revision of tax laws to permit the deduction of home and childcare expenses for working parents.
V. That child-care facilities be established by law on the same basis as parks, libraries and public schools, adequate to the needs of children…
VI. That the right of women to be educated to their full potential equally with men be secured by federal and state legislation, eliminating all discrimination and segregation by sex…at all levels of education, including colleges, graduate and professional schools, loans and fellowships, and federal and state training programs such as the Job Corps.
VII. The right of women in poverty to secure job training, housing, and family allowances on equal terms with men… [and] revision of welfare legislation and poverty programs which deny women dignity, privacy, and self-respect.
VIII. The right of women to control their own reproductive lives by removing from penal code laws limiting access to contraceptive information and devices, and by repealing penal laws governing abortion.
